Last week we learned that the BC Government is preparing an “Assistance to Shelter Act”. The Act says that the bill proposes to allow police powers to compel people sleeping on the streets under conditions of extreme weather to go to a shelter. If all shelters were full, people would be taken to jail. To [...] Should the homeless be allowed to risk their lives by sleeping outside in winter? British Columbia is drafting the country’s first legislation that would give authorities the power to compel homeless people to go to shelters or even jail during extreme cold- or wet-weather periods.
